This Thanksgiving season, our 6th and 7th grade AVID students took inspiration from the iconic Macy’s Day Parade, but with an academic twist! Instead of the traditional giant balloons, students created their own parade featuring college mascots from universities across the country.
As part of AVID’s focus on college and career readiness, students researched a college of their choice, learning about its history, traditions, and the significance behind its mascot. From fierce animals to legendary figures, each mascot tells a story, and students were excited to uncover the meaning behind the symbols that represent these campuses.
The project blended creativity with inquiry-based learning. After completing their research, students transformed their mascot into a parade-style display balloon. Now, as you walk through our middle school hallway, you’ll see a colorful lineup of college mascots “marching” proudly in our very own school-wide parade.

Mrs. Jines’ 7th Grade Social Studies classes recently went on an exciting adventure, sailing the high seas during the Age of Exploration!
Students were each assigned roles aboard their ships — captains, lieutenants, barbers, cooks, and sailors — and worked together to navigate the unpredictable oceans. Along the way, they faced all sorts of challenges, including pirate attacks, scurvy, storms, navigational troubles, and even the boredom of long voyages. Some crews even claimed to have discovered mysterious new sea creatures!
But the greatest drama came at the end of their journey: a mutiny! When it was revealed that the captain had been stealing food from the crew, the sailors decided enough was enough. With a loud chant of “Walk the plank! Walk the plank!” the captain was sent overboard!
Students had a fantastic time experiencing the dangers, excitement, and teamwork of life during the Age of Exploration — all while learning what it took to survive the open seas.
